PaGES 10: students’ visit at the SloNMR Centre
|On 12 and 17 March, the students involved in the PaGES 10 project visited the CERIC Partner Facility at the National Institute of Chemistry in Ljubljana.
Accompanied and supported by researchers from the Slovenian NMR Centre, pupils could learn the basic principles and applications of one of the most powerful analytical techniques for the characterisation of (bio)materials: nuclear magnetic resonance.

After a brief but useful introduction about how this technique works, the students splitted into groups and took turns observing and carrying out small activities at four stations:
– wet lab: sample preparation (and freezing stuff!)
– solid-state NMR
– solution-state NMR
– data analysis: from spectra to molecular structure

Many thanks to the researchers involved, who explained the secrets of NMR to an audience of interested students!
Pupils will now produce a scientific report on the performed activity and, then, organise a dissemination event at each school aimed at their peers, presenting the knowledge they have acquired in a creative and appealing way!
Thanks to our colleagues at the SloNMR Centre also for providing pictures of the activities.
