Post-doc position – MAG-ALCHEMI project – Closed on May 15th, 2019

The Central European Research Infrastructure Consortium, CERIC–ERIC, is an integrated multidisciplinary Research Infrastructure open for basic and applied research in the fields of materials and biomaterial sciences and nanotechnology. CERIC has been built by integrating leading national research facilities based in 8 countries (Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Romania and Serbia and Slovenia) into a unique European entity supporting the production of basic knowledge and technology transfer and promoting the mobility of researchers in an international multicultural scientific environment.

This post-doc position is available for the CERIC-ERIC MAG-ALCHEMI project, in the frame of collaborative research between the Elettra Synchrotron (Dr. Andrea Locatelli, Dr. Tevfik Onur Menteş, Dr. Francesca Genuzio, Nanospectroscopy Beamline), the Jagiellonian University Krakow, National Synchrotron Radiation Centre SOLARIS (Dr. Marcin Zając), the AGH University of Science and Technology, Krakow (Dr. Michał Ślęzak,) and Jerzy Haber Institute of Catalysis and Surface Chemistry (ICSC), Polish Academy of Sciences, Krakow (Dr. Piotr Mazalski, Prof. Dr. J. Korecki).

The MAG-ALCHEMI project aims at developing new concepts to control the local magnetic anisotropy in thin films through chemistry. By exposing the film to atom and molecules, electron, photon and ion beams, controlled changes in the surface stoichiometry will be induced which in turn modify the film magnetic properties in a laterally resolved manner. The planned research will focus on systems of increasing complexity, spanning from simple ferromagnetic layers to ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic multilayers grown on a variety of single crystal supports.

Job description

The successful candidate will participate to collaborative research with the groups based in Krakow and Trieste. His/her activity will focus on growing and characterizing the electronic and magnetic properties of micro- and nano-structured ultra-thin films using experimental techniques such as x-ray photoemission electron microscopy, low energy electron microscopy , magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE). Part of his/her work will be dedicated to the commissioning of a MOKE set-up to be installed at the Nanospectroscopy beamline of Elettra (Trieste, Italy) and the development of time-resolved equipment for XMCD-PEEM for Elettra.

The job is based in Trieste.

Qualification and other requirements

  • Ph.D. in physics, chemistry or related disciplines is required, together with a background in ultra-high vacuum based surface science and magnetism.
  • Experience with the following techniques is highly desirable: synchrotron radiation photoelectron spectroscopy, synchrotron x-ray absorption spectroscopies, in particular x-ray circular magnetic dichroism.
  • Experience in cathode lens microscopy: low energy electron microscopy (LEEM) and/or photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) will be considered as preferential assets.
  • Additional experience in programming, Labview or Python/Jython.
  • Time management skills and ability to prioritize are expected, together with the capability to interact with collaborators, as well as to work as part of an international, multi-disciplinary team.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are important.
  • Knowledge of data and image analysis software Igor Pro.

Conditions

Duration – 1 year contract, without a possibility of extension. The job will start from 1st of September 2019.

The salary will be commensurate with previous experience and qualifications of the Candidate.
