3rd edition of the seminars on Physics of Matter at Elettra and FERMI
The “Seminars on Physics on Matter at the synchrotron” have come to their 3rd edition. The initiative has been sponsored by the Italian representing entity of CERIC, Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste and the University of Pisa, as part of the framework agreement signed between the two institutions.
From 28 to 30 January 2020, a group of 16 students in Physics at the Pisa University, together with Prof. Riccardo Mannella and Prof. Simone Capaccioli, took part in the 3-day event of lectures and hands-on activities in the labs, with focus on the study of condensed matter through both synchrotron and free electron laser (FEL) radiations at Elettra and FERMI, respectively.
Students performed experiments, and the related data collection and analysis, at the XRD, IUVS, SAXS e DXRL synchrotron beamlines di Elettra, as well at the experimental station TIMEX at FERMI. A visit to the SYRMEP beamline, which has applications in medical diagnostic radiology, materials and life sciences, completed the programme.
The programme included the participation of several scientists from Elettra (Maurizio Polentarutti, Sigrid Bernstorff, Francesco D’Amico, Giuliana Tromba e Alessio Turchet), FERMI (Carlo Callegari, Laura Foglia, Emiliano Principi, Jacopo Stefano Pelli Cresi), TU Graz (Barbara Sartori, Benedetta Marmiroli), University of Trieste (Renata Longo).
CERIC Science Communications Officer, Davide Montesarchio, gave an introductory presentation of the consortium and of the access opportunities offered to researchers in all fields of materials, biomaterials and nanotechnology.
The event has been incisive in further creating synergies between research institutions and academic institutes and universities, which are key to train young researchers and to allow them to enter the research realm with the knowledge and skills as expected by the international scientific community.
