For Ukrainian citizens & residents fleeing war in Ukraine – Cloud Engineer and System Administrator

The military aggression of Russia against Ukraine forced many Ukrainian nationals to emigrate. Europeans are called to help Ukraine in any possible way. CERIC-ERIC will host 18 post-doc researchers and 2 IT developers that will be able to continue with their research activities in the premises of CERIC or its Partner Facilities, for a period of one year, renewable as long as the Temporary Protection Directive (TPD) is renewed.

CERIC is a European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC) integrating and providing open access to some of the most advanced analytical facilities in Europe to help science and industry advance in all fields of materials, biomaterials and nanotechnology, with a focus on energy materials and life sciences. 

POSITION DESCRIPTION

CERIC is a member of the European Science Cloud (EOSC) association and is currently experiencing an expansion of its IT capabilities due to the increased needs stemming both from its external involvement (Open Clouds for Research Environments – OCRE) and increased internal demand.

Among others, we are building and exploring flexible and scalable computing environments in the cloud. These range from providing services available to our community, to individual focused applications. The main focus is on bridging the gap between traditional high-performance computing (HPC) and local workstations in scientific workflows (data analysis, simulations and data storage).

You are expected to act as a core member of the small (5), young and international team. As a cloud engineer, you will be involved in the whole software life cycle, including design, development, deployment and maintenance.

The position is open solely for Ukrainian nationals and/or residents, beneficiary of Temporary Protection or International Protection.

QUALIFICATIONS AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Ukrainian citizen and resident entitled to temporary or international protection in any EU country as a consequence of the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine
  • Degree in Computer Science or related field or equivalent work experience
  • 4+ years experience managing servers in a distributed and highly available mission critical infrastructure
  • Solid technical skills in several of the areas of Systems Engineering, administration and networking, virtualization, performance tuning including CentOS and Ubuntu
  • Time management, attention to detail, expectation setting and organizational skills to provide solid service management. Ability to work on own initiatives with minimal management supervision
  • Ability to communicate in written and spoken English

Nice to have:

  • Experience with multi-site applications, including disaster recovery and load-balancing
  • Demonstrated work experience with the Cloud including familiarity with AWS Services (in particular VPC, EC2, S3, Route 53, RDS, Elastic Beanstalk and AWS partnership) or equivalent 
  • Management of Elasticsearch, clusters and MySQL or Postgresql databases
  • Familiarity with Git/Gitlab and Continuous Integration and Deployment
  • Knowledge of rapid deployment tools like docker, terraform and ansible

Extras:

  • Familiarity with ITIL processes and procedures is a strong plus
  • Interest in science, as you will be working with scientists on a regular basis

CONDITIONS

The position will be based in Basovizza, Trieste, Italy, for a period of one year, renewable as long as the Temporary Protection Directive (TPD) is renewed. The salary offered will commensurate with qualifications and experience. Benefits include meal vouchers, health insurance, education and training, 33 days holiday + Bank holidays.
